Since 1980, Joe Schenkman worked for his uncle until Alfred’s death in 1984, when Joe reorganized the company under the name of Schenkman Books, Inc. and relocated the company in Rochester, Vermont where he continues the fine tradition of academic publishing. Prior to 1980, Joe was a contributor to the vibrant underground comix scene in New York and San Francisco, collaborating with Art Speigleman and Bill “Zippy” Griffith to do Short Order Comix, as well as drawing comics for the New York newspapers, the East Village Other, and Rat Subterranean News. He was contributing editor to the National Lampoon “when it was funny.” He earned a BA from Johnson State College, and M.Ed from Vermont College. He is a multi-instrumentalist and currently performs with the Skanktone Jug Band, and is the music producer of the Rochester Park Summer Concert Series and White River Valley Players’ annual Harvest Fair. Joe’s cousin Byron is a renowned baroque harpsichordist The Skanktone Jug Band, a big fish in the Rochester small pond entertainment scene.
